Our Mission
The Florida Democratic Lawyers Council is a chapter of the Washington, D.C.-based National Democratic Lawyers Council (NDLC), a national organization of attorneys and others who are dedicated to enforcing and reforming our election laws in order to make voting fair and accessible to all eligible voters. Our goal is to establish a network of attorneys and others throughout the State of Florida to work together to advance the goals of election reform. As Democrats, we share the common goal of electing more Democratic officials at local, state and national levels, and we use our unique set of legal resources to achieve this critical goal, while staying focused on our core voting rights mission.
The Florida Democratic Lawyers Council is a resource for Democratic incumbents and new candidates at all levels of government in Florida. During each election cycle, we provide lawyers trained in election law to monitor polling sites across the State in an effort to ensure that everyone who is eligible to vote is allowed to vote and that all votes are properly counted.
We are currently focused on the following substantive voting rights issues:
- Fair enforcement of the Voting Rights Act, including prevention of minority voter intimidation and vote suppression.
- Advocacy in Congress to preserve the special provisions of the Voting Rights Act when they come up for renewal in 2007.
- Ensuring reliable and accurate voting systems that provide verifiable paper trails.
- Elimination of long voting lines and waiting time, particularly by demanding the placement of more voting machines in minority neighborhoods.
- Implementation of improved early voting systems.
- Fair implementation of the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), including uniform standards for provisional and absentee ballots.
- Improved absentee ballot procedures.
- Simplified and more accessible voter registration.
TheFlorida Democratic Lawyers Council provides a permanent organization of attorneys and others dedicated to voting rights issues. We at the Florida Democratic Lawyers Council are here to fight for the rights of our voters.
